New project on the fitness of chemicals legislation

The Commission recently conducted a review of the REACH Regulation and one of its findings was that SMEs find REACH burdensome and difficult to implement.  The Commission, together with ECHA, have taken measures to aid SMEs in complying with this regulation.  However, the review also found that other pieces of chemicals legislation can be troublesome for SMEs due to the inter-linkages between legislation and the complexity of requirements.

We have won a project to identify and evaluate the impact and consequences of implementing the CLP Regulation (EC No 1272/2008 on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures) and to evaluate the way in which it interacts and coexists with other pieces of chemicals legislation.   We will also seek to indicate any areas where the costs of implementation appear to be relatively high compared to the benefits for health and the environment.
