Incident Management 2
RPA is working for the Environment Agency on the costs and benefits of incident management. Each year, the Environment Agency responds to a range of incidents, such as chemical spills and waste fires, that have the capacity to negatively impact the environment. RPA’s work is building on an earlier study that estimated the damages from a small number of incidents. The current study involves reviewing available data on incidents to determine if they can be grouped into typologies that share similar characteristics. Alongside this, we are carrying out a review of the literature to identify monetary values that could be used to monetise the damages caused by incidents and hence the benefits of incident management that arise from reducing those damages. Through application of the values to a set of case studies, we aim to determine an indicative benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of incident management for the different typologies. The findings will help inform business planning and allocation of funding within the Environment Agency.
