Coastwise Graveyards

RPA are currently working with the Coastwise team to develop a transition plan to support North Norfolk District Council with the challenges associated with graveyards in the face of coastal change. Graveyards hold emotional, cultural and religious significance for many individuals. Many of the graveyards at risk on the North Norfolk coast are still active and hold significance in the local communities. RPA is aware that this is a sensitive issue and that these sites have a special meaning, role and value to people. With this in mind, care will be taken to ensure that activities and engagement considers the sensitive nature of this and tackles the subject in a considered way whilst emphasising that it is important to proactively plan for a changing coast. The work will investigate evidence of burial sites being moved, the current legislation surrounding burial grounds and questions and challenges around graveyard transition. The framework produced by RPA will equip NNDC decision-makers with a practical tool to navigate the complexities of planning for graveyards affected by coastal erosion, balancing heritage preservation, environmental considerations, and community needs.
