Defra consultation to postpone REACH deadlines to 2029 or beyond

On 14th July 2025 Defra opened a consultation on the government’s proposal to extend UK REACH transitional registration submission deadline.  The closing date for the consultation is 8 September 2025.

After leaving the EU, the UK can no longer access information submitted under EU REACH Registration for substances which continue to be placed on the GB market.

This latest consultation is a deferment of registration deadlines under UK REACH. The existing deadlines are October 2026, October 2028 and October 2030. The proposal is to extend the first registration deadline by up to three years to October 2029.

Allowing for a transitional timeframe, Defra cites the reason for the extension is to provide time to finalise and implement the legislative changes required under the new alternative transitional registration model (ATRm), consulted on in 2024.  Information requirements for the new registration model are not expected to exceed those outlined in the 2024 consultation.
